According to API 682 standard, Plan 53A is a pressurized dual seal arrangement that relies on an external reservoir to supply barrier fluid to the seal chamber.

To manage the heat generated during operation, both air-cooled and water-cooled configurations are available for Plan 53A.

While air-cooled systems offer simplicity and are suitable for lower heat loads or locations with limited cooling water access, the water-cooled configuration remains the most common choice in practice. This is primarily due to its superior heat dissipation efficiency, which makes it ideal for applications involving higher operating temperatures, faster shaft speeds, or more demanding process conditions.

As a result, water-cooled Plan 53A systems are widely adopted across refineries, chemical plants, and other continuous-duty services where reliable temperature control is critical for seal longevity and performance.
